Port Improvements Planned

Port of Benicia: Strengthening Our Economic Future

The Port of Benicia, although smaller than many surrounding ports, is an essential hub for regional goods movement and an economic engine for Benicia. In 2023 the City successfully secured a Priority Production Area (PPA) grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, through a highly competitive process with other Bay Area municipalities, to begin critical planning for modernizing and improving the Port’s facilities and surrounding infrastructure.

This grant-funded project will assess the Port’s existing conditions, identify needed capital improvements, and develop strategies to reduce emissions, enhance climate resilience, and upgrade transportation connections. The project will review local zoning and design guidelines to ensure the Port remains competitive and capable of supporting mid/high-wage job growth. Public engagement is central to this effort, with input from local stakeholders and partnerships with institutions like Cal Maritime guiding the final plan.

By investing in the Port of Benicia, the City aims to safeguard its role in the regional supply chain, protect local jobs, and strengthen the community’s economic future for generations to come. More information will be shared as the project progresses, including opportunities for community participation and review of proposed improvements.
